Fjord Hikes AS · Kjerag, from Stavanger
A van collects you in Stavanger or Sandnes, drives you up to the Øygardstøl trailhead, and a guide walks a group of eight or fewer over the three climbs to Kjeragbolten and back. Pick it because the hard part of Kjerag is getting there and finding the way, and this day takes care of both.

Fjord Hikes runs this as a long, simple day. The van leaves Stavanger (or Sandnes) and takes about two and a half hours to reach the fee car park at Øygardstøl, with a short stop in a village on the way and the bare, lunar plateau of the Lysevegen at the end. After a five-minute safety briefing the group sets off with the guide. The listing allows about 5.5 hours for the hike, then it's the same drive home. Expect to be back in the evening, eleven hours after you left.
The hike itself is the real Kjerag: about 11 km out and back, roughly 750 m of climbing, and three steep granite ridges each way with chains on the steepest slabs (Fjord Norway's trail page rates it red, challenging). The guide sets the pace, fills water bottles with the group at a mountain stream, talks about the glacial landscape and leads you to viewpoints over the Lysefjord. At the boulder you decide for yourself. Stepping out means crossing a ledge about 30 cm wide above a 984 m drop with no railing, and plenty of people take the photo from the rock beside it instead. Our safety guide covers the ledge in detail.
Two caveats. The listing names "meals and drinks" among the inclusions but asks you to bring snacks and water, so pack your own lunch and treat anything extra as a bonus. And it is not for everyone: Fjord Hikes rules it out for pregnant guests, anyone with a fear of heights or vertigo, and people with low fitness. If you are fit, confident and only need a lift, the Kjerag Express bus from Go Fjords is the cheaper way up on its set summer days.
Pickup in Stavanger or Sandnes, then east through a deep glacial valley and up onto the sheep-dotted mountain roads, with a short stop in a local village.
At the fee car park and service building at the trailhead, the guide runs through the route, the chains and what to do on wet rock.
The first climb begins almost at the car park. Two more climbs follow, separated by alpine valleys, before the trail crosses the granite plateau toward the boulder.
Time at the boulder, where the queue for the photo can be long on sunny days, and at viewpoints over the Lysefjord. Stepping onto the boulder is your call.
The same three climbs in reverse. The chains on the descents are where tired legs need the guide most.
Drop-off back in Stavanger in the evening.

Hard for a day hike. It is about 11 km with roughly 750 m of climbing over three steep ridges each way, partly on chains. The guide helps with pace and route, not with fitness. Read how hard Kjerag is before you book.
No. The guide takes you to the boulder and the viewpoints, and the step across the ledge is your decision. Many people photograph it from beside the crevice instead.
In Stavanger or Sandnes. The listing includes pickup and drop-off; check the exact point in your booking confirmation.
Only while the road to Øygardstøl is open, roughly mid-May to October. The chains on the trail are taken down when the road closes. See the best time to hike Kjerag.
